I remember the day Beautiful Thing came out in the cinema, it was a wonderful sunny Brighton day and I went to see it on my own at the cinema on Brighton Marina. I’d taken the day off to see it and god job too as I watched it 3 times in succession! This is the only film I’ve ever done that with, I was completely taken by it. There was so much that resonated with my first ever love affair at the age of 17 with Shaun, we were both serving in the armed forces so it was illegal for many reasons.
The story of Jamie and Ste and their growing love for one another is amazing. Set on a South London housing estate during a Summer heatwave in the mid nineties, the story also reminds me of my own growing up pains and coming to terms with being Gay which was very hard. Give the film a go, it is truly refreshing.
